Enabling Innovation in Pork Production

Problem Statement

The agriculture sector, particularly the pork industry, faces increasing pressure to digitalize and leverage data for transformation. This digital shift is necessary to improve efficiency, animal welfare, and sustainability. However, sharing sensitive data in this industry—such as personal information, strategic insights, or competitive data—presents significant challenges. Privacy concerns and the need for data sovereignty prevent companies and stakeholders from freely sharing data, which limits innovation and collaboration. The pork sector needs a solution that can unlock the value of data while ensuring that sensitive information remains protected.

Solution Description

The "AI4Pork" initiative, spearheaded by University de Lleida, participant in Pontus-X Ecosystem, aims to create a secure and trusted data space for the agriculture sector, particularly focusing on the pork industry. This data space will enable stakeholders to share and collaborate on sensitive data without relinquishing control over it. The core of this solution lies in using Ocean Enterprise's Compute-to-Data technology, which allows data analysis and computations to be performed where the data is stored. This ensures that the data itself never leaves its secure environment, protecting it from unauthorized access or misuse. Only the computation results—such as metrics on animal well-being or production efficiency—are shared with relevant stakeholders, preserving the confidentiality of the original data.

Ocean Enterprise Features Used

  • Compute-to-Data: Algorithms are executed directly within the secure data storage environments, allowing data owners to retain complete control over their data while still contributing to industry-wide insights.
  • Trusted Execution Environments (TEE): These provide an additional layer of security, ensuring that computations can be performed in a protected hardware space, further safeguarding sensitive data from exposure.
  • Blockchain: Blockchain technology is used to ensure transparency, traceability, and immutability in all data transactions and processing activities within the data space. This builds trust among stakeholders by ensuring that data access and use are fully auditable.
  • Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI): This feature enables data providers to manage and control access to their data in a decentralized manner, giving them full autonomy over who can view or use their information.

Details and Description

The AI4Pork initiative is designed to support the digital transformation of the pork sector by providing a secure, decentralized environment where data can be shared responsibly. The system integrates multiple layers of security and privacy-preserving technologies, including Compute-to-Data and Trusted Execution Environments, which allow for secure and confidential analysis of sensitive data. Blockchain ensures that all interactions within the data space are fully transparent and immutable, building trust between participants. Additionally, the use of Self-Sovereign Identity ensures that data providers maintain control over their data access rights, making it easier for them to participate in the data-sharing ecosystem without fear of losing control over their proprietary information.

Value Creation

The AI4Pork initiative creates significant value for the pork sector by enabling safe and secure data sharing, which is essential for improving animal welfare, increasing efficiency, and driving innovation in agriculture. By utilizing privacy-preserving technologies, companies can collaborate on critical data without compromising competitive or sensitive information. This fosters an environment of trust, allowing for more effective data-driven decision-making across the industry. The aggregated data, coupled with advanced analytics, can generate valuable insights that improve animal well-being, enhance production efficiency, and promote sustainability. Additionally, the transparency and immutability provided by blockchain help ensure that all stakeholders benefit fairly from shared data, potentially unlocking new monetization opportunities for data providers.
